Sustainable Mobility Policies: Overview of Global and European Initiatives for Greater Sustainability
The paper provides an overview of UN and EU policies and measures in the field of sustainable (urban) mobility and presents the basic characteristics of sustainable urban mobility plans.
Also, it provides an overview of the opinions of the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC), which brings together civil society organizations and in many ways points out the necessary measures and indicates the direction in which the transportation system and mobility of citizens should develop to achieve green transition and improve the quality of life of citizens, as well as to enable EU member states, local authorities, transport operators, and local communities to better adapt to new trends and obligations.
While in urban areas, mobility and its sustainability are a combination of economic and environmental issues with a social context, in rural areas, it is primarily a social issue that must ensure mobility to the local population in an accessible, affordable, and sustainable manner. This paper will review policies to demonstrate the extent to which the EU considers plans for sustainable urban mobility as a suitable solution for the needs of individuals, communities, and the environment.
The paper highlights the need to adapt legislation, financial, and technical measures in Croatia to the new circumstances.
