ODRAZ organised an interesting event on December 10, 2021, focusing on the promotion of sustainable local development and civic participation in the revitalization of public spaces. More than 90 participants attended in person and remotely this hybrid event, organized as part of the project SUSTINEO – Through collaboration, participation, research and education to sustainability.

After an introductory greeting and a brief presentation of the project, students from five Zagreb’s faculties (Geography, Civil Engineering, Architecture, Transport Sciences and Sociology) presented their ideas for public spaces in five Zagreb locations.

The proposals were made during the workshops for students organized by ODRAZ and the Faculty of Transport and Traffic Sciences within the project “UrbanSTEM – for cities and communities of the future”.

Two very interesting presentations followed:

  • the first one on the proposal for urban revitalization of industrial zone which is only a 15-minute walk from the centre of Zagreb;
  • the second was related to importance of citizens’ contribution to the planning and arrangement of public spaces on the example of design for the reconstruction of the main square in Koprivnica, using the method and tools prepared by URBACT interregional cooperation programme.

An interesting panel discussion “Promotion of sustainable local development and civic participation in the revitalization of public spaces” was held, moderated by Lidija Pavić-Rogošić from ODRAZ. Panelists were representatives of City of Zagreb and City of Koprivnica, Association of Croatian Towns, Faculty of Architecture and Department of Sociology, Faculty of Philosophy.

Participants were actively involved in the discussion, so we are looking forward to future public panels that we plan to organise within the project.
