Neighbourhood for People: Participatory Planning of Tratinska and Ozaljska Streets

The project is aimed at involving citizens in participatory urban space planning in their neighbourhood with the aim of increasing the community’s resistance to climate change and improving the quality of life in the urban space. Through a participatory workshop and public presentation of the results, it encourages dialogue between citizens and local administration and contributes to the creation of a common vision for the development of public space in accordance with the city’s environmental and climate goals.

A neighbourhood for people

The project is based on the concept of integrated planning, according to which streets are not viewed exclusively as transport infrastructure, but as public space, climate infrastructure, social space, health space and part of the green infrastructure network. It is precisely in a densely built urban fabric that streets are extremely suitable for creating multifunctional spaces from which citizens benefit in multiple ways.

Kvart po mjeri ljudi

The area of Tratinska and Ozaljska streets faces a series of interconnected environmental and social challenges characteristic of densely built city districts. Streets are predominantly perceived as traffic corridors, not as public and social spaces. Climate change further exacerbates existing problems, and there is also resistance on the part of citizens towards new approaches to urban planning, which indicates the need to strengthen competences, awareness and involvement of the local community in decision-making processes.

Project Objective

The general objective of the project is to involve citizens in the urban planning process in their neighbourhood and strengthen the social and climate resilience of the local community.

Specifically, the project will:

  • increase citizens’ awareness of climate change and adaptation options in urban space,
  • strengthen citizens’ competences for participation in spatial planning,
  • develop concrete proposals for the improvement of Tratinska and Ozaljska streets,
  • encourage cooperation between citizens, local government and other stakeholders.
