Through knowledge towards sustainable local development

The purpose of education was to increase capacity for local sustainable development in several towns and municipalities gathered in LAG Una along with towns of Knin and Drnis and their surrounding municipalities, all located in the area of Special State Concern.

Through acquirement of new knowledge and skills different stakeholders, especially the employees of local governments, was increased local capacities for planning and implementing sustainable development.

During the education, the participants had an opportunity to evaluate and rethink the prevailing models of social change and development, while at the same time increased capacities for work in their environments and contributed to changes for a wider social benefit.

 

     

            Target groups:

            • Employees of participating towns and municipalities in the LAG Una area and towns of Knin and Drnis with surrounding municipalities
            • Councillors
            • Other institutions, associations, etc
            • Business sector representatives

            Selected target groups was selected because sustainable development and wanted improvement of life quality in local communities can only be achieved through cooperation of representatives of various sectors and government.

            Results:

            • 10 days of education (5 blocks, 2 days each) and practical work in between blocks
            • 25 carefully selected participants gained new knowledge and skills (e.g. on sustainable development, social capital, public deliberations and participation of public in decision making process, intersectoral development partnership for sustainable development, sustainable development planning based on assessment of needs, sustainable development implementation through partnership projects, etc.)
            • two partnership projects prepared, based on relevant needs
            • 80 hrs of technical support in preparation of needs assessment and designing projects
            • experiences gained through examining examples of best practice.

            Methods

            Training specifics
            Training programme lasts several months and was a combination of theory and practical work. It consisted of 5 two-day blocks. In between blocks, the participants were obligated to use gained knowledge and skills in practice (e.g. assessment of community needs, project design).

            Methods of working and learning
            The main focus of the education was on gaining new knowledge and skills, while changing attitudes and way of work. Aside from introductory lectures, training was conducted in small groups, in interactive manner, through display of theory and practical work on concrete project ideas, role playing, etc.

            After the training finished, the participants remain members of Community Network, facilitated by ODRAZ, within which they receive info on further training, call for applications, new publications and so on.
