Media literacy and digital citizens

The project strengthens media literacy and critical thinking among teachers and students, while improving the legislative framework for digital education, addressing the challenges of misinformation and contributing to the implementation of the Education Action Plan until 2027.

This project is a result and continuation of the partners’ collaboration within the Croatian Digital Literacy Network. The network was formed with the general goal of strengthening intersectoral cooperation and building the capacity of stakeholders from the civil, public and private sectors for research and development of the digital society in Croatia. The network conducts scientific research and develops research based policy guidelines in the fields of digital inclusion, digital education and digital transformation, and is organising thematic conferences in order to present the trends and best practices.

The project is implemented through three interconnected components:

  • Development of research-based educational policy guidelines, involving the analysis of over 50 documents and conducting 20 interviews with relevant experts to formulate recommendations for decision-makers.

  • Education of teachers and students on media literacy, with a special focus on critical analysis of media content. Activities include thematic trainings, webinars, and digital storytelling workshops.

  • Awareness-raising campaigns, which include fact-checking in the field of sustainable development, a video campaign on LinkedIn, and a national conference aimed at promoting responsible and conscious digital participation.

Project objectives:

  • Develop research-based educational policy guidelines to enable the integration of media literacy into the education system, fostering critical thinking, digital resilience, and responsible online behavior among students.

  • Design and implement a media literacy education program for teachers, equipping them with tools to recognize and combat misinformation, promote ethical digital conduct, and critically analyze media content in teaching.

  • Increase public awareness through online campaigns and a national conference, promoting the importance of media literacy, responsible digital participation, and advocating for stronger educational policies in this field.

With new knowledge and tools, teachers will more easily recognize and counter misinformation, while students will strengthen their critical thinking skills regarding digital content. The project also contributes to the development of educational policies and broader European efforts to protect democracy, promote human rights, and encourage inclusive participation in digital society.
