Join us this summer in Šibenik for the round table discussion “Green Transition of Coastal Cities”. It will be held on July 26, 2024, starting at 10 AM at the St. John’s Fortress Campus (Put Tanaje 29, Šibenik). The working language of the round table is English. Registration deadline: July 24.

The round table will present innovative student solutions to real challenges faced by Šibenik and Liepāja, as well as many other coastal cities. Seven student teams will showcase their proposals, offering sustainable and creative solutions to improve local mobility systems, urban spaces and their accessibility, enhance cities’ climate resilience, and develop zero-emission maritime and coastal transportation.

In addition to student presentations, the round table will host experts who will share experiences and exchange views on various aspects of the green transition of cities, including social, technological, and spatial changes, through two panel discussions.

The presentation of student projects is the final activity of the international summer school “Co-creation for innovation,” held from July 22 to 25, 2024. It gathers 28 participants from Croatia and Latvia, studying transportation, civil engineering, urbanism and architecture, geography, spatial planning, landscape architecture, computing, economics, and sociology.

Within interdisciplinary and international teams, and under the guidance of experienced mentors, participants have only four days to develop solution proposals for one of seven real-world challenges defined by the cities themselves. The challenges focus on developing efficient and multimodal mobility for tourists and residents, mitigating the effects of climate change in coastal cities, improving accessibility of urban spaces for vulnerable groups with an emphasis on the elderly and those with reduced mobility, and developing ecologically and climatically acceptable coastal and maritime mobility.

After the presentations, the teams will answer questions and receive feedback from an expert panel and the attending public.

The first of the two panel discussions, “Knowledge Driving Positive Transformation”, will focus on the possibilities and effects of exchanging experiences and knowledge among cities on how the URBACT program can systematically support mutual learning. Using the example of the URBACT network PUMA, which deals with transportation and involves representatives from Croatia and Latvia, the benefits and methods of citizen engagement to change their attitude towards sustainable mobility will be presented.

The second panel discussion, “New Solutions for Sustainable Cities”, will examine innovations as the foundation for a better quality of life in urban areas. It will discuss the connection between social and technological changes, the social acceptance of innovations, and methods of introducing new solutions into urban systems. Experiences from the SPINE, Accelerate2Move, and GREENCO projects will be presented.
